About Rett Syndrome

run4rett.jpgFacts about Rett Syndrome

  • Rett Syndrome (RS) is caused by a random genetic mutation in over 99% of the cases

  • It is considered a severe neurological and developmental disorder

  • It is seen almost exclusively in females and is believed to occur in 1:10,000 female births

  • Girls with RS appear to develop normally until 6 to 18 months of age and then go through a period of regression, often losing any speech acquired, as well as fine and gross motor skills

  • Rett Syndrome is often misdiagnosed as autism, cerebral palsy, or a non-specific developmental delay

  • Girls with Rett Syndrome need full-time assistance with every aspect of their daily living

  • RS girls have very engaging personalities and love to participate in social, educational, and recreational activities

Since identifying the responsible gene 10 years ago, there have been considerable breakthroughs towards better understanding the cause of this disorder, but we are still working towards finding a cure and reversing the debilitating effects it renders on those afflicted with Rett Syndrome.

Please join us and help raise critical funds to help us find a cure and make a difference in the lives of the girls and their families living with Rett Syndrome.

All proceeds go to the Ontario Rett Syndrome Association for Research, Education, Support and Awareness.
